I died last week...but it's unofficial; I just declared myself dead. I decided to die because I was aperson that had a hard time saying“no” to people. There is an advantage being dead, like for example: "Could we contact Leland
to help out with the Art Annual? Oh, I forgot. He's dead. Never mind, we'll get someone else." See,  I'm automatically off everybody’s list. And that's just the beginning. I can go where I want, do what I want andwhen I want without having to check to see if it’s legal. I will be liberated from persistently having to produce something noteworthy or commercially viable. When I was alive, there were always things I had to do; all those trivial chores, those annoying obligations given to me by people I barely knew, those red circles on the calendar reminding me of places I had to go...regardless of how I'm feeling at the moment, I'm not a part of it. No more the anxiety of expectation. Gone, all gone, I'm beyond the anxiety ofdeadlines, tax forms, payments due, climate change, flood insurance, the national debt, my debt, the war in Syria, the neighbor's dog (barking in the middle of the night), and the fat around my waist. As of now…it's all beneath me.
I no longer care if you like my painting or not. I don't care if it gets accepted into the annual or not. I don't care if it sells or not, or who buys it. I don't care if you like me or not. I don't care if I like you or not. Idon't care if I'm too fat or too skinny, or too tall or too short. I don't care if I'm loved or not. I simply just don't care. All those medical and dental appointments I can now cancel because I'm dead and am no longer a slave of blood tests, uncaring
doctors, and waiting rooms ..…Being dead and every dawn becomes a bright Sunday morning.
When I close my eyes, I feel like a child who had just been told that school is out and the first day of summer vacation has begun. I feelthe warmth and breath of summer on my uplift face. I hear fluttering ofwings high above my head and imagine the clouds languidly drifting by in a sea of cerulean blue. With this sense of freedom, my
imagination soars toward that mysterious, unknown place, where I have to please no one...not even myself. Honors and humiliations are words that have neither value nor meaning. They no longer entice or threaten me. I will be as close to being as true to myself as I ever will be. I have departed...I am free. I am dead.
And now that I am dead,…you would think my paintings would sell for a bit more, don't you think?

May  2012

THE PREZ SEZ

All Hands on Deck! The Spring Show is upon us. This is a great opportunity for all our new or nearly new members to meet people they’re going to like. It’s also the single most important fund raising activity we will have all year.
It takes the involvement of most of our membership to produce this magnitude of a show. Last year 45 individual members took the time to help out. The days when help is needed are: 4/28 receiving, 4/29 receiving, 4/30 judging, 5/10 loading show art on a truck, 5/11 setting up the show, 5/11 helping with Preview Night Benefit, 5/12 staffing show, 5/13 staffing show, 5/13 returning art to Studio after the show. Patti Wallace will assign tasks to volunteers.

When you are talking to anyone about our Spring Show please remember to mention:

It is the largest open juried art show in Northern California. It’s a great place to take Mom on Mother’s Day.
The venue is the Woodbridge Winery, on Woodbridge Road, one mile east of Hwy 99. *see map*
Admission is FREE. Hours are 11 to 5 both Sat. and Sun., May 12th and 13th.
Our Friday Night Preview Benefit is dedicated to provide art materials and supplies to our 7 public high schools. Tickets are $50 each or 2 for $75.
Every dollar we get from ticket sales is donated to our schools to keep art classes from being dropped due to lack of art supplies.

LCAC members can get up to 4 tickets for $20 each. If you are in the show, 1 of the 4 tickets will be complimentary with the remaining 3 available at $20.00 each. Every outside artist in the show will receive 1 complimentary ticket and can buy 1 additional ticket for $20.00. We want a good turnout and we want to have a big check to turn over to the school district for our high schools.

We got a wake-up call on April 5th when our landlord’s leasing agent showed up to bring a potential client to look at one of our Lakewood Mall spaces. We have always known that when business improves, we will have to move or pay the standard rent for a space such as ours would command. That’s probably 3 or 4 times what we are currently paying. It looks to me that the time has come to at least start searching for acceptable new quarters. No doubt that will prompt a lot of discussion about what is desirable and affordable. I plan to appoint a Location Search Committee to get started after the Art Show – hoping that we have that long.

We had a very small turnout for our April membership meeting with an art demonstration by Sandy and Ron Ridley. I would like some feedback as to whether it is worthwhile to continue to spend $150 for these demonstrations. We have not been able to get much press so very little public attendance either. Let me know what you think. The new Board will have a planning meeting sometime in June to map out our budget and activities for 2012 – 2013 year.

We will have an election of officers at our May 8th membership meeting. Our Nominating Committee recruits candidates for each elected position, but anyone can place their name in nomination for the 4 member elected positions of President, Vice-President (and Art Show Chair), Secretary andTreasurer at the meeting before we do any voting. Committee chairs are recommended by the President to the Board of Directors and approved by the Board.

Rich Allen, LCAC President

Featured artists  should make a list of the works in their show, including title, media, and price; and place it in the
front of the inventory box by the Saturday that art is received for the monthly show. Please take the time to look at the featured art area and bring only as many works as can be shown attractively in the space available. Do not simply bring a big stack on works and leave it to the gallery committee to choose what to hang.

Thanks,

Caroline
                                                                First Friday

Featured artists are asked to send images of their work to Karen Barila at Kbarila@lodi.gov two months before their show.
Karen has limited hours at the library and needs a good time lead to get the posters ready. These posters feature art and info about the Art Hops in the Lodi Community Art Center and at the Lodi Public Library. Digital is best, but snap shots can be scanned if that is all the artist can furnish

Gallery policies (Updated 4/17/12)

1) All work must be for sale, except up to 10% of the Featured Artist Show. Boost the price if you hope it does not sell.

2) We don't hang reproductions (giclees), except up to 10% of the Featured Artist Show. You are welcome to sell these asmatted items in the racks.

3) Paintings should be wired for hanging. Wire ends should be taped.

4) We take in work on the last Saturday of the month and allow work to come in through the following Tuesday morning. (we hope you will courteously notify any work coming in Tuesday ahead on time). Anything beyond that places an unfair burden on those preparing the gallery for First Friday.

5) The gallery Chairman is in charge of gallery appearance. Please don't take it upon yourself to rearrange.

6) Hanging fees and staffing obligations and options are spelled out in the document titled “Staffing Plan” as published in the April 2012 LCAC newsletter.

7) A piece of art should be shown in only one regular member show per year—that art might be shown again in a competitive show or in a featured artist show, but we want to maintain a fresh look in the regular monthly shows.

8.) Please be sure works are clean when you bring them for a gallery show. Dust accumulates during storage.

9) Works on Canvas: Should be framed with the exception that studio wrapped canvas may instead be painted around the side. Please do not bring unframed canvases without painted edges. Should be wired at the back.

10) Works on paper should be framed under glass. Frames should be wired at the back. Anchor wire( and any metal attachments with screws). Tape, staples, and nails should not be used in place of screws.

News From Patti Wallace

LCAC CHARITIES POLICY

After considerable discussion, the LCAC Board voted unanimously to adopt the following policy regarding fund-raising at our Gallery for other charitable groups. We are happy to include publicity articles, submitted by LCAC members, to our LCAC Newsletter to promote fund-raising events for other groups. We do not wish to involve the Gallery in collecting and accounting for monies going to other organizations, since it involves governmental reporting on our part and would open the door to all of our members requesting this kind of activity. The only exceptions would be when working with neighboring art groups such as thePotters’ Guild and Stockton Art League. They will be handled on a case by case basis.

To All Members and Friends

From: Rich Allen
RE: P.A.L.S. assistance request

We have been approached by Landa Durrell of PALS with a request for help in making sets for their annual fund raising event on June 23rd, at the Woodbridge Winery. Many of you have already been involved with PALS and know of their mission to improve the lives of animals in our community. If you have ever been involved with live theater, you will have an idea of what they may want us to paint. It’s not like painting a mural,it’s much less detailed.
We need 5 or 6 people who will be willing to paint stage sets during the first couple of weeks of June. We can plan a walk-through meeting with Landa, at the winery, to get an idea of what is needed and where they will be located. The theme of the event is 50’s High School reunion. Try to imagine the look and images from “Grease” and you’ll have a general idea.
I would like to get volunteers lined up now, before we are completely involved with our Spring Art Show.
If you need to contact Landa, her e-mail is jumpersoutlet@comcast.net.

Volunteers: Rich Allen, Janet Hayden,
